About This Skill
This skill guides you through a structured 3-stage workflow (Context Gathering, Refinement & Structure, Reader Testing) to co-author documents like PRDs, design docs, RFCs, and proposals. It includes 5 initial questions, 5-10 clarifying questions, and iterative section building with quality checks.
Quick Start
1Tell the skill what type of document you need (e.g., PRD, design doc, proposal).
2Answer the 5 initial context questions and dump all your ideas.
3Work through each section with brainstorming, curation, and refinement until the document is complete.
Example Command
Write a PRD for a new user authentication feature
Core Capabilities
Context Gathering
Close the knowledge gap by asking 5 initial questions, encouraging info dumping, and generating 5-10 clarifying questions to capture all requirements.
Refinement & Structure
Build document section by section through clarification, brainstorming up to 20 options, curation, gap checks, and iterative drafting with str_replace.
Reader Testing
Validate the document by simulating reader perspectives and testing for clarity, completeness, and impact before finalizing.
Document Type Identification
Automatically recognize and adapt to various document types including PRDs, design docs, decision docs, RFCs, and technical specs.
Usage Examples
Before
I have scattered notes about the API but no clear structure.
After
The skill guided me through context gathering, then built each section iteratively. Final doc is organized and ready for review.
Input
Draft a proposal for migrating our database
Output
A proposal document with executive summary, current state analysis, migration plan, risk assessment, and timeline.
Input
Create a spec for a new feature
Output
A technical spec covering overview, requirements, implementation details, testing strategy, and rollout plan.

# Docs Generator
## Overview
Structured workflow for collaborative document creation. Act as an active guide through three stages: Context Gathering โ Refinement & Structure โ Reader Testing.
## When to Trigger
- User mentions: "write a doc", "draft a proposal", "create a spec", "write up"
- Doc types: PRD, design doc, decision doc, RFC, technical spec
- Substantial writing tasks requiring structure
## Workflow Stages
### ๐ฏ Stage 1: Context Gathering
**Goal**: Close the knowledge gap between user and assistant.
1. **Initial Questions** (ask all 5):
- What type of document?
- Who's the primary audience?
- What's the desired impact?
- Is there a template?
- Any constraints?
2. **Info Dumping**: Encourage user to dump all context
- Background, discussions, alternatives, constraints
- "Don't worry about organizing - just get it all out"
3. **Clarifying Questions**: Generate 5-10 numbered questions based on gaps
4. **Exit Condition**: When edge cases can be discussed without explaining basics
๐ **Detailed Guide**: Read `references/stage1-context.md`
---
### ๐ฏ Stage 2: Refinement & Structure
**Goal**: Build document section by section.
**For each section**:
1. **Clarify**: Ask 5-10 questions about what to include
2. **Brainstorm**: Generate 5-20 numbered options
3. **Curate**: User indicates keep/remove/combine
4. **Gap Check**: Ask if anything important is missing
5. **Draft**: Use `str_replace` to write section
6. **Refine**: Iterate based on feedback
**Quality Checks**:
- After 3 iterations with no ch
Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ
Which AI tools or platforms is this skill compatible with?
This skill is designed as a prompt-based workflow that works with any AI assistant that supports structured conversation and code execution (e.g., Claude, GPT-4, Copilot). It uses standard text output and str_replace for drafting.
Who is this skill for?
It's for developers, technical writers, product managers, and anyone who needs to create structured documents like PRDs, design docs, RFCs, or proposals. No prior writing experience required.
How is this different from just asking an AI to write a document?
Instead of a one-shot output, this skill uses a collaborative 3-stage workflow that ensures all context is captured, sections are built iteratively with your input, and the final document is tested for reader clarity. This reduces revisions and improves quality.
Does this skill support multiple languages?
Yes, the workflow is language-agnostic. You can write documents in any language. The skill focuses on structure and clarity, not language-specific grammar. However, the initial questions and prompts are in English.
What kind of results can I expect?
You'll get a well-structured, reader-tested document that covers all necessary sections. Typical outputs include PRDs, design docs, decision docs, and proposals. The iterative process ensures the document meets your specific needs.
